There is a statutory requirement for each local authority with responsibility for children's social care to establish a Local Safeguarding Children Board
Local Safeguarding Children Boards replace Area Child Protection Committees as of 1 April 2006, and are multi agency groups which aim to safeguard, protect and promote the welfare of children
This arrangement is a key mechanism for agreeing how relevant agencies and organisations will co-operate and work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and to ensure this work is effective
Core Functions
Developing policies and procedures for safeguarding children and promoting their wellbeing
Participating in the planning and commissioning of services for children in the local area to ensure safeguarding and promoting welfare is taken into account
Communicating and raising awareness in respect to the need to safeguard children and promote their wellbeing
Developing procedures to ensure a co-ordinated response to unexpected child deaths (2008)
Collecting and analysing information about unexpected child deaths (2008)
Undertaking serious case reviews were the criteria is met
Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of what is done to safeguard children and promote their wellbeing
Membership
Core membership of the Board comprises representatives of the local authority, health agencies, the police and other relevant agencies
