Applying for a secondary school place

Main Details

Secondary school offers for September 2014

The official offer letters of secondary school places were sent on 3 March 2014. You don't need to confirm the place you've been offered with us, but do keep your letter for your records. The appeal period starts from the day you receive your offer letter. The forms you'll need to appeal and guidance to help you are available on the appeals page.

How to apply

The online admissions system has closed now for children starting secondary school in September 2014.

If you've missed this deadline please fill in the late application form as soon as possible. But, as we'll have received these late, we'll only be able to deal with them after applications we've received on time. This could mean that you have less chance of a place being available at one of your preferred schools.

Step one:

Choose your preferred three secondary schools.

Before you apply, research the schools in your area.  You could attend school open days / evenings, read the school's most recent Ofsted reports or check school league tables.

Think carefully about the preferences you choose. If you need advice, speak to the area pupil access team at your local area education office.

For more information see our frequently asked questions.

Step two:

Read the supporting documents relevant to your area as they include specific details about the admission criteria for each school. This information should be read along with 'Information for Parents 2014/15'.

Step three:

Fill in the late application form, you will need to have the following handy:

  • Your name, address, telephone number and a valid email address.
  • The forename, surname and date of birth of the child.
  • The name of the child's current primary school.
  • The name of the district council that the child lives in.
  • The child's permanent address (if different from the parent/guardian applying).
  • The names of your preferred three secondary schools.
  • Details of brothers or sisters that are attending one or more of the schools you are applying to.
  • If the child receives care, you need the name of the Local Care Authority that is responsible for this care.

Voluntary Aided (church) secondary schools and academies usually have a supplementary information form (SIF) which they will provide for you to complete.   Please return to the appropriate school(s) immediately.

Step four:

Your application must be submitted as soon as possible.

The closing date for applications to the new state-funded Burnley High School is at a later date of 28 February 2014. Parents should apply directly to the school by visiting http://burnleyhighschool.co.uk, you can make an application to the High School in addition to your applications to other schools.
