News: Roundabout Work To Begin

Monday, 8th March 2004
(PR 1156)

Road improvements to ease congestion on Byron Road in Colne will begin on March 15th.

For many years the junction of Byron Road and Skipton Road has been a bottleneck for traffic travelling to and from North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

The work, costing around £600,000 to widen the junction and replace traffic lights with a roundabout to ease traffic flow, is scheduled to take 25 weeks. Pedestrians and cyclists will also benefit from new improvements to the layout when the scheme is complete.

County Councillor Jean Yates, Lancashire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said:

"We need to do whatever we can to relieve this busy junction - and we believe building a roundabout will ease the traffic flow.

"It is not only motorists who will gain, as residents have had to live with a poor situation for far too long."

Some traffic delays will be inevitable between late-March and the completion date of August but county council staff will do their best to ensure they are minimised.
