News: Works On A671 Whalley Road, Read

Tuesday, 22nd June 2004
(PR 1419)

Work has started on a major scheme to resurface part of the A671 Whalley Road, Read, and make improvements to a stretch known as "Devils Elbow".

Engineers from Lancashire County Council will be carrying out major bridge strengthening and road realignment works at Devils Elbow. Whalley Road will also be resurfaced between Accrington Road and New Marls Woods. Improved signing and road markings will also be installed.

Whalley Road will be closed from 9.30am on Monday 19 July until 5.00pm on Sunday 5 September 2004 - or earlier if the job is completed ahead of schedule. A diversion will be signed via the A680 Accrington/ Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors, A678 Burnley Road and A6068 Barrowford Road.

A county council spokesman explained:

"This is a major project that will result in a high quality road surface and many road safety features. The majority of the work has been scheduled for the school holidays as we expect there to be less traffic on the roads at peak times.

"It is probable that there will be delays during the work so we are asking motorists to be patient."

Although preparation work has begun then main scheme will begin on 19 July and is scheduled to last seven weeks.
