News: £200 Prize For Road Safe Student

Friday, 25th June 2004
(PR 1438)

A local student is already on the road to success after winning £200 towards driving lessons from Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group.

Toby Elles, 16, a 6 th form A/S level student at Our Lady's Catholic High, Lancaster won the prize after seeing the Group's Theatre in Education production ‘Never Saw the Day.' The road safety drama looks at the issue of speed, peer pressure and the lasting affects of a road crash on a group of friends.

Students were asked to fill out a questionnaire before and after the performance to gain feedback on young people's attitudes to driving and whether the performance had any affect on them.

Clare Farrer, Principal Road Safety Adviser presented Toby with his prize at a presentation at Our Lady's this week. Toby's questionnaire was picked out from thousands of entries from students throughout the County to win the £200 prize.

Clare explained:

“Never Saw the Day addresses road safety issues in a contemporary, interactive style targeting a vulnerable road user group; young people. By addressing the consequences of inappropriate speed we can hope to reduce road casualties in this age group.”

In 2003, 136 people in the 16-19 year age group were killed or seriously injured on the County's roads and 681 sustained slight injuries.

Toby, a Theatre Studies student said:

“I really enjoyed the production, it really made me think about the cost of speeding, not only to yourself but to others around you.

“Having £200 to put towards driving lessons will be a great start to getting out on the road. Never Saw the Day has really enforced driving safely, something that I will take with me when I'm out on the road.”

Head of 6 th form, Sandra Thornberry added:

“Careful driving is a message that we're keen to enforce. I hope after seeing the production this will translate into safe driving.”

Students who saw the Never Saw the Day production also received a ‘1 in 5' booklet, reminding them that they have a 1 in 5 chance of having a crash within the first year of driving. The 1 in 5 package, which is used in the classroom, also contains:

  • Tutor notes
  • 'What if?' Car video
  • 'What if?' Motorcycle video
  • Poster
