Carriageway & Footway

Lancashire County Council is responsible for maintaining the roads (carriageways) and pavements (footways) of adopted highways and for keeping them safe to use. 

An adopted highway is one where the local authority has taken on the legal responsibility for maintenance and the administration of highway legislation via the Highways Act 1980 and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA). This includes planned and emergency maintenance surveys and street works.  See Adoption Standards and Estate Roads Specification  

Adopted highways are inspected regularly with any imminent danger to road users or pedestrians dealt with promptly.  Please let us know of any problems affecting the highway.  We will need from you the exact location, the road name and/or number, your contact details and any additional information you wish to provide. Please could you also indicate whether you feel the situation requires urgent attention or is a hazard.

What we deal with:

Motorway Roadworks* or those on the A585 (M55 to Fleetwood) are the responsibility of the Highways Agency - Information Line 08457 50 40 30.  (Lancashire County Council is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites.)  

*Lancashire County Council is responsible for a short length of motorway in East Lancashire; M65 from junction 10 at Burnley to junction 14 at Colne (junction 14 being the terminal roundabout at the junction with the A6068).
