Course Objectives

The conference keynote session will focus specifically on creative and exciting approaches to supporting the development of key skills in writing. The workshops will offer practitioners opportunities to explore how elements of speaking, listening and writing skills, can be promoted alongside key learning in the other areas of learning and development.

Keynote Presentation: Creativity with Rigour - Inspiring Writing with Key Skills

This keynote session will explore the approaches needed to teach and develop writing skills in EYFS with a focus on outcomes for children. Practical examples of developing writing in practice will be shared with guidance on how to implement in the classroom.

1. Physical Development
Viv Parsons, Teaching and Learning Consultant for Early Years
This practical workshop will provide lots of fun ideas and activities for continuous provision to support the development of the gross motor movement, fine motor skills and dexterity which are essential for writing and are a vital part of the Moving and Handling aspect of Physical development.

2. Outdoor Provision – Bringing stories to life
Anne Conroy, Teaching and Learning Consultant for Early Years
This practical workshop will highlight the importance of using the outdoors to support effective learning. Exciting ideas and activities will explore how using stories can support the development of speaking, listening, and writing.

3. KUW – Technology. iPads and EYFS – practical activities and ideas
Rob Musker, Teaching and Learning Consultant for ICT
This is a practical session that will look at activities that can be used to support pupils inside the classroom and in the outdoors. iPads will be provided for delegates to use on the session, who will undertake several of these activities themselves.

4. Mathematics
Andrew Taylor, Teaching and Learning Consultant for Mathematics
This practical workshop will explore how children can enhance hands-on activities through mathematical mark making. The session will also focus on children's mathematical speaking and listening and how this complements the development of writing in maths.

5. Expressing Art and Design – 'Art'
Alison Kirk, Associate Teaching and Learning Consultant for Art, St Peter's Primary School, Chorley
This practical workshop will explore mark making and drawing skills, developed into 3-d art skills. All these skills will enhance speaking and listening and provide opportunities for writing.

6. KUW – Talking, Recording and Working Scientifically
Rachael Webb, Teaching and Learning Consultant for Science
This workshop will provide a range of fun, practical science ideas to support the development of talking, recording and working scientifically in EYFS.
